Burgundy Villages & Towns

The region that A Piece of Burgundy have houses for sale within covers Northern Burgundy, Southern Champagne and Haute Marne.  There are very many sights and interesting villages in this region of eastern France, lots of them based around the famous wines and the famous people drawn to them over the years.

Below you will find a selection of villages in our region, with short descriptions and photos. 


 Châtillon sur Seine

The capital town of the Châtillonaise region, this lovely small town has much to endear it to the tourist and expat alike. 

It sits between the grand vinyards of Burgundy and Champagne, just after the birth of the famous River Seine as it courses though France towards Paris and the Channel.  Sitting atop the Plateau de Langres on the cross roads from all the main towns in this region, it is rightly placed as the heart of the region, warm, imposing, majestic in the summer and winter sun alike.

Here you will find fine restaurants, excellent shopping and famous sites, such as the Vase de Vix, the Source de la Dioux and the beautiful Xth Century St Vorles Church, see below.

 St Vorles

This impressive Xth century church looks and feels every one of those 1000 years of history.  Its recent renovation has reclaimed some of its treasures and lost none of its history.

Sitting at the highest point of Châtillon sur Seine, as so often these churches do in France, St Vorles enjoys the best views, the rightful place as its centre piece and a cemetry so full of old and distinguished people from France's history, kept in perfect condition by the people of Châtillon that it is truly a walk through the history of the Republic.

 Essoyes

A charming village of Southern Champagne set below the huge vinyards of the plateau aound Noé le Mallets.  It was this charm and situation that brought Claude Renoir, one of the most famous artists from France, to live most of his adult live here, in the village.

The museum Atelier Renoir is set at the foot of his garden ad is well worth a visit.  There is also the Mussee des Vignes here, right beside the River Ource as it traverses the village.  If you would like to understand Champagne and it position as the most famous wine in the world, visit is required.

fter sampling the delights of the village, you must drive the climb onto the plateau to see the Vinyards.  Truley a spectacular sight, vinesfor a far as you can see, in all directions, up hills, down hills, wonderful.  And better still lots of Producers giving tastings and tours of this great wine, including Pinot Noir; one of the great red wines grown here.

 Arc en Barrois

Nestled into the rolling hills of Haute Marne, just beside the border with the Cote D'Or is Arc en Barrois.  A lovely little market town with a Hotel Chateau, a famous Church, which was on a old Pilgrimage route, and a pretty stream running through its centre.

The whole area around Arc en Barrois is forested, the Foret Dominale de Arc en Barrois which gives the visitor many options for cycling, walking and bird watching.  This whole region along the border with the Cote D'Or, along the fledgling Aube valley is very well worth exploring.

 Montbard

For many people the Gateway to the North Cote D'Or.  Montbard is a busy market town on the TGV line from Paris to Dijon and Besançon, with all routes North and South.  The TGV is the jewel in the crown of French Transport and its speed and safety are renowned.  The station at Montbard is on particular importance to anyone living in this region as it has daily and direct links to the airport Charles de Gualle, the International Trains at Lille International Station and Paris at Gare de Lyon*.

The countryside around Montbard is hilly and forested to the north, hilly and more open to the south.  Nearby is the impressive Ancient Abbaye de Fontenay which really must be a part of any trip to this area, as should the castle grounds set at eh summit of Montbard itself.

*  Trains run once daily to Charles de Gualle and Lille, including Disneyland, and four times daily to Paris and Dijon.  The airport and Paris are only 1 hour 5 minutes away, Lille is 3 hours and Dijon a mere 25 minutes.
